Referrals
We understand that insurance plan requirements can be complicated and confusing. Please read your insurance plan's benefits very carefully in order to understand the regulations and restrictions.
One of the basic rules for patients that belong to a managed care insurance company is to obtain a referral before consulting with a specialist or before performing any procedure or laboratory examination. Please consult with your insurance's customer representative if you are not sure if those rules apply to you.
If your primary care provider deems necessary to refer to a specialist our office will generate an electronic referral that needs to get approved by your insurance company. At that point we will call you to let you know everything is ready. Only then can you proceed to visit the specialist. The turn around time for referrals is one to two weeks. If the primary care physician feels the referral needs to be done on an urgent basis we will make an exception in order to speed up the process.
If you see a specialist and that specialist orders tests, such as blood work or an MRI, you still need to get a referral from your primary physician before performing those tests.
We are not allowed to post date referrals. That means we cannot generate a referral after you have been seen.
If you have an emergency and feel you need to go to the Emergency Room we strongly urge you to call us first in order to get pre approval. If you chose to go in your own without the PCP's prior approval, coverage for the care rendered to you or your family may be denied.
In life threatening situations it is not necessary to call your PCP. You should be provided by your insurance carrier as to what is considered "life threatening emergency."
